The Truth About Mental Illness

It’s not your fault

“I had people saying to me, ‘It’s all in your head.’ And I’d say, ‘Do you honestly think I want to feel this way?’” —Sonia Estrada, Nipomo

Nobody chooses to have cancer. Similarly, nobody chooses to have a mental illness. And you cannot just snap out of it. Mental illness is not a life sentence. There is help and hope. Treatment can make all the difference.

Mentally ill is not who you are

“It’s tough to get my mind to function.” —Becky Carroll, San Luis Obispo

Mental illness is a disease you have. Depression, bi-polar disorder, and schizophrenia are all diseases. They do not define the mentally ill any more than diabetes defines the diabetic. Mental illness does not imply moral weakness or lack of character. And just like diabetes, treatment leads to recovery for even the most serious mental illnesses.

You are not alone

“I fought the stigma by trying to look good.” —Sonia Estrada, Nipomo

The stigma and discrimination associated with mental illnesses often keeps those who need and want help from seeking treatment. There is no need to go it alone.

Friends and relatives can help

“I need one less pill when I am around you.” —Neil Travis, Arroyo Grande

When someone you care about has a mental illness, it impacts both of your lives in very real ways. Each year, 57 million adults suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder. There’s a good chance you know one of them. Offer your support.
